So BMX is turning 50 in July…. Where did it all start?

Whilst other types of cycle racing existed before this it was 1969 in Southern California that the sport of BMX started to become organized and resemble the modern sport.

Originally influenced by the likes of Ron Mackler, a park attendant in Santa Monica who set up races at Palms Park.

It was a bit later appearing in the UK with BMX racing exploding on to the scene in the early 80’s, with the first world BMX championship being held in 1982. The UCI integrating the sport in 1993 and it becoming a staple of the x-games around the same time.

BMX then became an Olympic sport in 2008 when it first featured on the schedule of the Beijing games which further catapulted the sport forward.

The London games in 2012 has helped create a lasting legacy with new clubs, tracks and competitions popping up all over the county.

Exeter BMX track first opened it’s doors at Exwick in 1982 and moved to Cofton Road in Exeter a few years later where it remains.

Since then children and adults alike have been inspired to take to the track and we always welcome new people.
